The story opens on BRIDGE and ELI, a young couple living in a rundown, isolated home. They share a tender, happy moment, but this is quickly fractured by Eli's "quiet unraveling". As Eli's mental state deepens, he turns to heavy drinking, becoming paranoid and violent. Bridge, increasingly worried, tries to help him with meditation and prayer, but his transformation into someone unrecognizable and dangerous pushes her to the edge.

The conflict climaxes one night when Bridge jolts awake to the smell of gasoline. She finds Eli, looking completely changed, standing on the lawn with a cigarette, ready to burn the house down. She stops him, but realizes in that moment that she needs to save herself.

Later, as Eli finally sleeps, Bridge prays for escape. She sees visions of a beautiful, glistening world—an ocean, a city, a forest. A bright light covers her , and she is transported to her next life , having been forgiven by God and made into an angel.
